Week 1


This sci-fi colony management game is a work in progress I started for the 60-90 game jam. The theme is endurance, which made coming up with an exciting idea a challenge....well, without resorting to making an action or sports game with some sort of stamina meter. I've always enjoyed playing city builder and colony management games like RimWorld, Surviving Mars, Planet Base and This War of Mine and figured I'd be more likely to finish a game in a genre I really enjoy playing.

So first things first, the most difficult part has been creating a working gameplay loop. A working core loop in this genre requires pathfinding for the characters,  some understanding of what a resource is, where its at, when to get it, where to take it etc.
I spent most of my time this week creating systems that can talk to each other and make these decisions for each character. As of today there is no real loop yet, however; you can place buildings on the map, characters will move resources into the Galley building once it's built. Once the Galley has become stocked the game soft locks because the characters currently dont know what do if you have a delivery there is no longer a space for.

For week 2, I plan to have a working loop, where resources can be produced by characters working jobs and building's require resources to place, and dont build immediately. One caveat about this jam is it limits individuals to an hour per day working within the project, which can make working on complicated systems more complicated because they can take hours sometimes to get working smoothly.
